Oita prefecture’s Beppu city, which boasts the world’s highest yield of hot spring water, has drawn up plans to become an “amusement hot spring city.” As part one of this initiative, Beppu announced the “Spa-musement (spa + amusement) Project.” The mayor pledged to implement this project if its video gained more than a million views on YouTube, making it the world’s first video interlocked to a public pledge based on view count. It quickly went viral and gained the needed million views within 4 days.
